Olive Oil Contains Oleocanthal

A compound in olive oil, named oleocanthal, inhibits COX enzymes, just like the ibuprofen, which is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

Studies lead by Dr. Breslin and his colleagues in the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, reported that oleocanthal is a reason for the extra virgin olive oil’s health benefits.

The results of these studies, explain the high consumption of olive oil in the every day Mediterranean diet and the low rates of heart disease in the Mediterranean region.

The researchers said that the oleocanthal in the extra virgin olive oil, has a stinging sensation in the throat, just like ibuprofen. This pharmacological activity of the oleocanthal, acting like a natural anti-inflammatory, gets stronger in the high qualities of extra virgin olive oil.

This group of doctors, produced a synthetic version of oleocanthal and received the same results. This confirmed that the oleocanthal is the active compound in olive oil.

Two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil daily, contain about ten percent of the recomented dose of ibuprofen for pain relief in a person.
